Social Media As An Artist

Social media for an artist is an essential tool for promoting your music and where you might be playing that music. It not only allows new people to discover but lets your loyal listeners follow along on your journey and engage further with your live shows or merchandise. So how should an artist be using social media to optimise their full potential?

Tips 1: Content Pillars

The number one secret to running social media consistently and effectively is content pillars. This idea is behind some of your most used brands, artists and campaigns. Content pillars are three or four categories of purpose that you post about. For an artist, these categories typically consist of BTS (Behind the scenes), lifestyle content, personality content and many more. An example of using one of these pillars may be making personality-based content in which you post content showing you engaging with a trend you find funny or sharing something new about yourself.

Tip 2: Show off your branding

Social media is one of many places where branding is essential. Showcasing a clear and unique brand identity allows you to stand out on the social media scene and creates an aspect of recognition that allows your audience to find you. By having an identity and a point of recognition you also create an aspect of remembrance and awareness which is the first step of building a loyal fan base.

Don't have a brand? Luckily you can create one just here.

Tip 3: Think about your audience

In a similar way to music social media is about creating and fostering a community, most likely the same community that will be tuning into your songs. As you implement your content pillars and branding you still want to be considering your audience asking yourself the basics, is this photo something that they will enjoy or resonate with? Would I want to engage or follow someone making this content? And most importantly does this content piece align with my brand and my values? If any of those is a no, you may not be thinking about your audience and it might be time to step back and re-evaluate what you're posting.
